This is the start of my journey into abstract painting. At the beginning I didn’t know what my new work would look like, except -very vaguely, that it should be spontaneous, expressive and intuitive. I wanted to start without a plan and build it through the process of painting. This is the story of the search for that process.

I primed some 12x12 boards and started to play with paint. At first I found it difficult even to cover the surface. Then everything I liked looked like something I’d done before and everything else fell apart. Gradually I started to figure out what I loved to do and what I didn’t.

I still don’t know what my new work will look like. These square paintings are works in progress towards finding out.
